Public Display of Affection - PDA

Gere-Shetty kiss

Several News Channel & Newspapers published the picture of Gere embracing Shetty at an AIDS awareness event in New Delhi, along with a detailed account of the protests across India.

According to some it’s cultural shock to the people…But is it really such a shock?

In larger cities( read: Metro) there seems to be marked change in the way people are perceiving public display of affection (PDA). Things like holdinng hands, hugs and even kiss, which was once considered as taboo, are now gaining acceptance among urban elite and upper middle class.

I belive there is nothing wrong in if people show affection when done in limits. PDA should be placed and situation appropriate.

When I first moved to metro city 7 years bac, I used to be shocked at he behaviour of teens. But today, its’ so common to see people kissing holding hands and hugging that I don’t even feel uncomfortable. Also, now I understand that it isn’t desperation, but just another way of expressing their love.

So my question is to all the protesters of PDA “if Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai can kiss in Dhoom 2, why can’t people in love show their feelings in public?”Trust me this is same janta who blow whistles in theatre and protest on road.

“The Supreme Court of India has described PDA to be in bad taste and unacceptable act, which may be considered an act of public nusisance, and sometimes leading to convivtion and/or fine from the involved parties”

Remember much talked anout incident took place a year back , there was the infamouus - Operation Majnu in Merrut, which had the police taking potshots at students and married couple for PDA in park.

Well there is not defining line to what’s obscene and what’s not. It’s sum total of your upbringing, the values instilled in you by your family, your perosnal viewpoint, etc.

Our previous generation won’t understand PDA and they construe as “modern way“. Also our law maker are still the older generation (mostly 75+) who still live in a world where man-womean interaction before marriage is not allowed. We must change and I agree that change is never easy. Give them some time… they’ll accpet it sooner or later.

Hiding your feelings are things of past. I think that Greg Gere had done nothing ‘obscene’ and so all other people who belive in PDA.

So next time you meet your partner in coffe shop don’t wait to get in dark cinema hall or car and yes do avoid camera phones!!

I think those protestors have got it all wrong… A kiss on a cheek that too of a willing party evoking such response… and with second highest ranking of HIV patients in our country, dealing with poverty, corruption, unemployment and everything else taking a backseat! If you have to fight, fight for just causes. Poor Gere who has done so much for social causes in India will not be remembered for them, but definitely for kissing a bollywood star. Phew!

I think this overreaction by protestors and media (yes media as well) is completely uncalled for… If this is about respect and modesty, where is it when women are felt all over on crowded buses. Give me a break guys….
    The hypocrisy is killing me.
