Jhini Jhini

I started listening to them 4 years back when I got one CD ” best of sufi” music. My curiosity with this band grew and then I bought 5 other album which was produced by them in last 15 years. Someone told me that band live performance is awesome and may take you to trance of music and life . Yes!! live experience was much more than I thought or heard.

Indian Ocean : Formed in 1990, the present line-up includes Sushmit Sen on acoustic guitars, Rahul Ram on bass and vocals, Asheem Chakravarty on tabla, percussions and vocals, and Amit Kilam on drums and flute.

With a raw and powerful lead voice, Ram is the group’s front man, being most often the one to speak to the audience. Rahul Ram, who has PhD in Environmental Toxicology from Cornell University and is a leading environmentalist, has been often spotted with social activist of Narmada Bachao.

Every song by this band has social meaning, mostly written down by tribal poets or social activist and of course very famous ‘Jhini Jhni’ by Saint Kabir

Kandisa title track is very famous composition by this band and very much in demand by youth. Kandisa’s songs are a superior tour de force with lyrics from poets like Gorakh Pande and Indira Kilam. My fav tracks are “Maa Rewa,” a traditional folk song in praise of the sacred Indian River Narmada.

“If you have heard them before, you will agree that there is very little (if any) reason to miss their live concert; especially if you are an admirer of gorgeous melodies, intricate percussion, and soaring vocals that spans pulse pounding energy at one end to soulful alaaps at the other. If you haven’t heard them before, be ready to be amazed!”
